Local Solar & Battery Guide

Springfield is the Robertson County seat, with a Victorian-era town square, brick ranches on quiet streets, newer subdivisions on the edges of town and working farms in every direction. That mix means solar here is not one-size-fits-all. Some homes want a tidy rooftop array. Others have the land for a ground mount that never touches the roof.

The Solar Roofers is a family-owned Nashville roofing and solar contractor working in Middle Tennessee since 2003. We got into solar after watching other crews damage our customers' metal roofs. We could not find a solar partner we trusted with our neighbors' homes, so we became one. Springfield is a straight run up Highway 41 from our shop on East Trinity Lane.

Solar and Battery Backup Built for Springfield

An average Nashville-area household uses about 1,075 kWh a month, roughly $134 at about 12 cents per kWh. Robertson County summers are long and humid, and older farmhouses and brick ranches can run the AC hard from June through September. Solar makes its best power in those same afternoon hours.

What brings Springfield homeowners to us:

  • Lower bills from daytime solar that offsets AC, well pumps and shop loads.
  • Backup power for rural roads where crews may take longer to reach you after a storm.
  • Ground mounts on acreage, which avoid roof penetrations and can face due south.

Solar is not a fit for every Springfield property. Homes tucked under big shade trees, roofs that face mostly north, or roofs near the end of their life can make the numbers weak. If that is your place, we will say so.

Springfield Power, Weather and Outages

Inside the city limits, power comes from Springfield Electric Department (SED), a locally owned municipal system that buys its power from TVA. Outside the city, many Robertson County homes and farms are served by Cumberland Electric Membership Corporation (CEMC), which has a district office in Springfield. Check your bill, since interconnection runs through your utility.

Tennessee is TVA territory, with no traditional 1-for-1 net metering. TVA retired the old Green Power Providers buyback, so the value of exported solar is limited. We size Springfield systems for self-consumption, powering your home and shop first.

The region sees roughly 5 to 7 outage-causing severe weather events a year: spring thunderstorms, high winds across open farmland and winter ice. Winter Storm Fern in January 2026 showed how long recovery can take; just south in Nashville, NES outages peaked at about 230,000 customers and nearly all power returned about 13 days after the storm. One Tesla Powerwall 3 typically covers the fridge, freezer, lights, Wi-Fi and a gas furnace blower or a small mini-split for roughly 12 to 24 hours, longer when solar recharges it.

Solar Across Springfield Neighborhoods

Downtown and the Historic Square

The Springfield Town Square Historic District and the older streets around it have Victorian and early 20th century homes with steep roofs and mature trees. We look hard at shade and roof condition, and a garage roof or ground mount is sometimes the better spot for panels.

The Legacy

Homes and townhomes around The Legacy Golf Course often have open exposure off the fairways. Townhome roofs are smaller and may fall under HOA rules, so we check before we design.

Highland Reserve and Newer Subdivisions

Highland Reserve, Stonegate and other newer subdivisions have young trees and simple gable roofs, which makes many of them strong rooftop candidates. Shingle roofs here are usually young enough to carry an array.

Oakland Farms and Established Streets

Oakland Farms and the established brick-ranch streets around town have long, low roofs that take panels well. Some of those roofs are due, so roof and solar together often makes sense.

Farms off Highway 76 and Highway 49

Out on the farms and hobby farms east and west of town, ground-mounted arrays are often the cleanest answer. Barns and shops can carry panels too, and a battery helps keep well pumps and freezers running.

What Solar and Batteries Cost in Springfield

Installed planning ranges before incentives. Not quotes:

  • Residential solar: $2.85 – $3.50 per watt. Typical home systems are 8 to 14 kW, about $22,800 – $49,000 installed, producing about 11,000 to 19,000 kWh a year.
  • Tesla Powerwall 3: about $15,400 installed, 13.5 kWh per unit, 10-year warranty.
  • Enphase IQ Battery: $12,000 – $18,000 installed, 5 or 10 kWh units, 15-year warranty.
  • Roof and solar together: typically saves $2,000 – $5,000 through shared permits, wiring, crew and scaffolding.

Worked example: an 8 kW array on a Springfield brick ranch runs about $22,800 – $28,000 installed and makes roughly 10,800 to 11,600 kWh a year. Ground mounts are priced in your written proposal based on the site.

There is no federal homeowner tax credit in 2026. The 25D credit ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025. Farms should not count on USDA REAP grants either, since 2026 USDA rule changes sharply restricted solar eligibility and are being challenged in court.

Roof First: Solar on Metal and Shingle Roofs in Springfield

Many barns and shops around Robertson County already wear metal roofs. On standing seam, panels attach with S-5! style clamps on the seams, with no roof penetrations. On shingles, every mount is lagged and flashed, often 40 to 80 penetrations on a typical array.

Never put a 25-year solar array on a roof with only a few years left. Removing and reinstalling an array for a later re-roof typically costs $3,000 – $6,000. When the roof is close, we plan the roof first. One crew, one warranty for roof and solar.

Our Springfield Solar Process

  • Assessment. We inspect the roof, attic and site, model shade and review a year of SED or CEMC bills.
  • Design and written proposal. Rooftop or ground mount, with a production estimate and line-by-line written price.
  • Permits and interconnection. We handle city or county permits and the SED or CEMC interconnection, usually 2 to 6 weeks.
  • Roof work if needed. If the roof is due, it comes first. Roof and solar together take about 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Installation. Rooftop solar takes 1 to 3 days on site, or 2 to 4 days with batteries and panel work.
  • Inspection, turn-on and walkthrough. After inspection and utility approval, we turn it on and walk you through monitoring and backup.

Common Springfield Solar Questions

Can I get a federal solar tax credit in 2026?
Not for a system you own. The 25D homeowner credit ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025. Leases and PPAs may still carry the business 48E credit through 2027. Talk with a tax professional.

Will a battery keep my well pump and freezer running in an outage?
Usually, if they are on the backup panel. One Powerwall 3 typically covers essentials for roughly 12 to 24 hours, and solar can recharge it each day. Well pumps vary, so we check the motor before we promise anything.

Am I on Springfield Electric or CEMC?
If you are inside city limits, it is likely SED. Outside, it is often CEMC. Your bill will tell you, and we confirm it at the assessment.

Is a ground mount better than a roof array?
If you have open land with good southern exposure, a ground mount is often easier to aim, clean and service, and it never puts a hole in your roof.
