Local Solar & Battery Guide
Hendersonville lives around Old Hickory Lake. Shoreline homes, wooded lots off Drakes Creek, brick ranches near Main Street and newer subdivisions like Durham Farms all sit within a few miles of each other. That variety is exactly why solar here has to be designed house by house.
The Solar Roofers is a family-owned Nashville roofing and solar contractor working in Middle Tennessee since 2003. We got into solar after watching other crews damage our customers' metal roofs. We could not find a solar partner we trusted with our neighbors' homes, so we became one. Sumner County is a short run up I-65 and Vietnam Veterans Boulevard from our shop on East Trinity Lane.
The average Nashville-area household uses about 1,075 kWh a month, roughly $134 at about 12 cents per kWh. Lake-country summers are hot and sticky, and Hendersonville homes lean hard on air conditioning from June into September. Solar makes the most power on those long summer afternoons, right when your AC is running hardest.
What usually brings Hendersonville homeowners to us:
Solar is not right for every lot. Heavily wooded lake lots and roofs that face mostly north can produce too little to justify the cost. We model shade before we recommend anything and will tell you if your home is not a fit.
Hendersonville is split between two TVA power companies. Some neighborhoods are served by Nashville Electric Service (NES), and others by Cumberland Electric Membership Corporation (CEMC). Your bill tells you which one you have, and it matters for interconnection paperwork and any buyback terms.
Either way, Tennessee is TVA territory and there is no traditional 1-for-1 net metering. TVA retired the old Green Power Providers buyback. NES customers can look at NESolar Connect and NESolar Savings, limited programs that buy eligible excess solar under specific terms and caps. CEMC members should expect limited export value too, so we size systems for self-consumption.
The area sees roughly 5 to 7 outage-causing severe weather events a year: spring storms, high winds off the lake and winter ice. In January 2026, Winter Storm Fern knocked out power to about 230,000 NES customers at the peak, and NES restored nearly all power about 13 days after the storm. One Tesla Powerwall 3 typically covers the fridge, freezer, lights, Wi-Fi and a gas furnace blower or a small mini-split for roughly 12 to 24 hours, longer when solar recharges it.
Homes near The Streets of Indian Lake and out on the Indian Lake Peninsula range from established lake houses to newer builds. Lakefront lots often have open southern exposure over the water, but big shoreline trees can cut into production, so shade modeling comes first.
Durham Farms is newer construction with young trees and clean roof planes, which makes many homes strong rooftop candidates. It is an HOA community, so we prepare tidy, color-matched layouts for review.
Neighborhoods off Drakes Creek Road, including Arrowhead, have larger homes on rolling, wooded lots. Big roofs give room for panels, but the canopy decides which planes are worth using.
The Saundersville area mixes brick ranches and two-story homes from several decades. Many have simple gable roofs that take panels well, and some are due for a new roof first.
Older ranch homes near Main Street and Memorial Park often have long, low roofs and mature trees. These roofs are frequently at the age where we recommend planning roof and solar together.
Installed planning ranges before incentives. Not quotes:
Worked example: a 9 kW array on a Saundersville ranch runs about $25,650 – $31,500 installed and makes roughly 12,150 to 13,050 kWh a year. Pair it with an Enphase IQ Battery at $12,000 – $18,000 and you have daytime savings plus essential backup.
No federal homeowner tax credit applies in 2026. The 25D credit ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025.
A solar array should outlast the next 25 years. The roof under it has to as well. Never put a 25-year array on a roof with only a few years left.
On standing seam metal, panels attach with S-5! style clamps on the seams, with no roof penetrations. On shingles, every mount is lagged and flashed, often 40 to 80 penetrations on a typical array. If you re-roof later, removing and reinstalling the array typically costs $3,000 – $6,000. When the roof is close, we plan the roof first. One crew, one warranty for roof and solar.
Is the federal solar tax credit still available in 2026?
Not for a system you own. The 25D homeowner credit ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025. Leases and PPAs may still carry the business 48E credit through 2027. Ask a tax professional about your situation.
Will a battery help in an outage like Winter Storm Fern?
Yes, for your essentials. One Powerwall 3 typically runs the fridge, freezer, lights, Wi-Fi and a gas furnace blower for roughly 12 to 24 hours, and solar can recharge it each day for longer outages.
How do I know if I am on NES or CEMC?
Check the name on your electric bill. We confirm it at the assessment because the interconnection process and any buyback terms depend on it.
Does a lake lot work for solar?
Often, if the trees allow it. Open water to the south is a plus. Heavy shoreline shade is a minus. We model it before we quote.
