Local Solar & Battery Guide
Gallatin is the Sumner County seat, and it has grown in every direction. Lake communities line Old Hickory Lake to the south, newer subdivisions spread along Long Hollow Pike and Nashville Pike, and the historic homes around the downtown square still anchor the middle of town. Solar works across all of it, but each part of Gallatin needs its own plan.
The Solar Roofers is a family-owned Nashville roofing and solar contractor working in Middle Tennessee since 2003. We got into solar after watching other crews damage our customers' metal roofs. We could not find a solar partner we trusted with our neighbors' homes, so we became one. Gallatin is an easy drive up Vietnam Veterans Boulevard from our shop on East Trinity Lane.
An average Nashville-area household uses about 1,075 kWh a month, roughly $134 at about 12 cents per kWh. Gallatin summers are hot and humid, and air conditioning drives much of that load from June through September. Solar panels make their best power in the same afternoon hours, so they offset the expensive part of your usage.
Here is why Gallatin homeowners call us:
Some Gallatin homes are not a good fit. Lake lots under heavy tree cover, roofs facing mostly north, and roofs near the end of their life can all make solar a poor buy until something changes. We will tell you straight.
Inside the city, power comes from the Gallatin Department of Electricity (GDE), a city-owned power company that buys its power from TVA. Homes outside GDE's service area in Sumner County may be on Cumberland Electric Membership Corporation (CEMC). Check the name on your bill, since interconnection paperwork runs through your utility.
Tennessee is TVA territory, and there is no traditional 1-for-1 net metering. TVA retired the old Green Power Providers buyback, so export value is limited. We size Gallatin systems for self-consumption, powering your home first instead of selling power back.
The region sees roughly 5 to 7 outage-causing severe weather events a year, from spring thunderstorms and straight-line winds to ice storms. Winter Storm Fern in January 2026 showed how long outages can run: next door in Nashville, NES outages peaked at about 230,000 customers and nearly all power came back about 13 days after the storm. One Tesla Powerwall 3 typically covers the fridge, freezer, lights, Wi-Fi and a gas furnace blower or a small mini-split for roughly 12 to 24 hours, longer when solar recharges it.
Fairvue Plantation has upscale homes, lake views and a golf and country club nearby. Larger roofs give room for panels, and HOA guidelines shape layout and color, so we prepare clean packets for review.
Foxland Harbor and the Fairways at Foxland Harbor sit near the lake with golf course lots. Open fairway exposure can be great for solar, and we model the lakeside trees before we commit to a layout.
Countrywood, off Bradley Road on the east side, is an established neighborhood with mature landscaping and larger lots. Shade varies house to house, and many roofs are at the age where roof and solar together makes sense.
Kennesaw Farms mixes established homes with newer construction near parks and schools. Simple roof planes and moderate tree cover make many homes solid candidates.
Older homes near the downtown square often have steep roofs, big trees and roofing that is due. We inspect structure and roof life first, then decide if panels belong on the house, on a garage or on a ground mount.
Installed planning ranges before incentives. Not quotes:
Worked example: a 10 kW array on a Kennesaw Farms two-story runs about $28,500 – $35,000 installed and makes roughly 13,500 to 14,500 kWh a year. Add one Powerwall 3 and the project lands around $43,900 – $50,400 before incentives.
There is no federal homeowner tax credit in 2026. The 25D credit ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025.
A solar array is a 25-year investment, and the roof under it has to last that long too. Never put a 25-year array on a roof with only a few years left. Removing and reinstalling an array for a later re-roof typically costs $3,000 – $6,000.
On standing seam metal, panels attach with S-5! style clamps on the seams, with no roof penetrations. On shingles, every mount is lagged and flashed, often 40 to 80 penetrations on a typical array. When the roof is close, we plan the roof first. One crew, one warranty for roof and solar.
Is there a federal solar tax credit for Gallatin homeowners in 2026?
Not for a system you own. The 25D homeowner credit ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025. Leases and PPAs may still carry the business 48E credit through 2027. Confirm with a tax professional.
What will a battery keep running in an outage?
One Powerwall 3 typically runs the fridge, freezer, lights, Wi-Fi and a gas furnace blower for roughly 12 to 24 hours. With solar recharging it each day, it lasts much longer.
Will GDE pay me for extra solar power?
Do not count on it. Under TVA rules there is no 1-for-1 net metering, so we design your system to power your home first.
Can I put solar on a ground mount instead of my roof?
Yes, if you have the land. Ground-mounted arrays work well on larger Gallatin lots and avoid roof penetrations entirely.
